Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1623–1673), was an English aristocrat, writer, philosopher and natural philosopher. During her exile in Paris, she married William Cavendish, later Marquis and first Duke of Newcastle. Cavendish published numerous works in different genres, including poetry, plays, philosophical writings and prose. Her best-known work is The Blazing World (1666), often regarded as an early science-fiction novel. In 1667, she became the first woman to attend a meeting of the Royal Society.
