Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) was a Scottish writer. He initially studied engineering and later law, qualifying as a lawyer but never practising. Because of his poor health, he travelled repeatedly and drew on these experiences in his travel writing. He became internationally known for the adventure novel “Treasure Island” (1883). Other notable works include “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” (1886), “Kidnapped” and “The Master of Ballantrae”. Stevenson also wrote historical novels, short stories, poetry, essays and plays. He died in 1894 at Vailima in Samoa.
