Dieter Pohl (born 1964 in Augsburg) studied history and political science in Munich. From 1995 to 2010, he worked as a researcher and department head at the Institute of Contemporary History; he completed his habilitation in 2007. In 2010, he became Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Klagenfurt, with a focus on Eastern and Southeastern Europe. His research areas include Nazi occupation and extermination policies in Eastern Europe, the Second World War, the history of the Soviet Union, Ukraine and the GDR, and mass violence in the 20th century. His works include “Holocaust: The Causes, the Events, the Consequences” and “The Rule of the Wehrmacht.” He also co-edited the 16-volume edition “The Persecution and Murder of the European Jews by Nazi Germany, 1933–1945.”
