Rebecca West (1892–1983), born Cicily Isabel Fairfield, was a journalist, travel writer and novelist. She adopted her pen name from a female character in a play by Henrik Ibsen. She wrote for publications including the New York Herald Tribune and Harper’s Bazaar, and covered the Nuremberg trials for the Daily Telegraph. In addition to journalism, she published novels and short stories. Her three-volume Aubrey family saga was inspired by her own family history; its first volume, The Fountain Overflows, was published in 1956.
