mawil, whose real name is Markus Witzel, was born in East Berlin in 1976. He began publishing comics in self-produced fanzines and anthologies while still at school. After graduating, he studied graphic design at the Berlin Weißensee School of Art and founded the comic group Monogatari with fellow students. His first longer album was “Strandsafari” (2002), followed a year later by the autobiographically inspired story “Wir können ja Freunde bleiben.” Among his best-known works is the East German coming-of-age story “Kinderland,” which received the Max and Moritz Award for Best German-language Comic in 2015. In 2021, mawil was awarded the Wilhelm Busch Prize for his complete body of work. A bespectacled rabbit serves as a recurring alter ego in his comics.
