Hans Dieter Zimmermann

Hans Dieter Zimmermann, born in 1940 in Bad Kreuznach, is a literary scholar and author. From 1969 to 1975, he served as secretary of the Literature Department of the West Berlin Academy of the Arts. He subsequently taught German literature at Goethe University Frankfurt and, from 1987 to 2008, at the Technical University of Berlin. Zimmermann published biographies of Heinrich von Kleist and Theodor Fontane, as well as books on Franz Kafka and the brothers Martin and Fritz Heidegger. As managing editor, he oversaw the 33-volume Czech Library in German. He also edited editions of works by Max Brod and Jiří Gruša. In 2000, he received the Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk Order.
