Dirk Werle studied modern German literature, Latin and philosophy in Freiburg im Breisgau, Pisa and Berlin. In 2005, he completed his doctorate with a dissertation on the history of imagined libraries in the early modern period. From 2006, he worked as a research associate at the Institute of German Studies at Leipzig University; he later became Professor of German Literary Studies at Heidelberg University. His research areas include European literary history since the sixteenth century, literary theory, and the history of scholarship in the humanities and cultural studies.
