Thomas Macho, born in Vienna in 1952, is an Austrian cultural scholar and philosopher. From 1993 to 2016, he was Professor of Cultural History at Humboldt University of Berlin. From 2016 to 2023, he directed the International Research Center for Cultural Studies (IFK) of the University of Arts Linz in Vienna. In 2019, he received the Sigmund Freud Prize for Scholarly Prose, followed in 2020 by the Austrian State Prize for Cultural Journalism. His monographs include “Todesmetaphern. Zur Logik der Grenzerfahrung” (1987), “Das zeremonielle Tier” (2004), “Vorbilder” (2011), “Schweine. Ein Portrait” (2015), and “Das Leben nehmen. Suizid in der Moderne” (2017).
