Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908–1961) was a French philosopher and a leading figure in phenomenology. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure and taught in Lyon and at the Sorbonne before being appointed to the Collège de France in Paris in 1952. His major work, »Phenomenology of Perception«, was published in 1945 and examined the role of the body in human experience of the world. With Jean-Paul Sartre, he helped edit the journal »Les Temps modernes«, leaving the editorial board after a disagreement in 1955. His other important works include »Eye and Mind« and the posthumously published »The Visible and the Invisible«.
