Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–1894) was a German physician and physicist and one of the leading polymaths of the 19th century. After studying medicine, he taught physiology as a professor in Berlin, Königsberg, Bonn, and Heidelberg. He later became professor of physics in Berlin. Helmholtz investigated connections between different areas of the natural sciences, combining theoretical work with experimental research and practical application.
