Karin von Schweder-Schreiner, born in 1943 in Poznań, Poland, studied Portuguese and French in Mainz and Lisbon. After working as a foreign-language correspondent, she became a freelance translator in 1978. She lived in Brazil for several years and translated works from Portuguese by authors including Jorge Amado, Chico Buarque, Rubem Fonseca, Lídia Jorge, Mia Couto, and Moacyr Scliar. Her work received several awards, including the International Translation Prize of Brazil’s Ministry of Culture in 1994 and the Albatros Prize of the Günter Grass Foundation in Bremen in 2006.
