Irmela Schautz

Irmela Schautz, born in 1973 in Ravensburg, studied painting and graphic art as well as stage and costume design. From 2005 onward, she worked as a freelance illustrator for publishers, magazines, newspapers and advertising clients. From 2012, she taught at the Academy for Illustration and Design in Berlin. Her work includes the illustrations for “Der geheime Ursprung der Wörter” (2020). She received the 2023 German Youth Literature Prize in the nonfiction category for “Queergestreift – Alles über LGBTIQA+” (2022; text by Kathrin Köller).
