Herbert Lackner, born in Vienna, studied political science and journalism. He was deputy editor-in-chief of the Arbeiter-Zeitung and subsequently served as editor-in-chief of the news magazine profil for 23 years. Lackner writes on contemporary history, contributing to publications including profil and Die Zeit. His books include Die Flucht der Dichter und Denker, Als die Nacht sich senkte and Rückkehr in die fremde Heimat. In 2017, he received the special prize of the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Political Books for Die Flucht der Dichter und Denker.
