Ernst Tugendhat

Ernst Tugendhat (1930–2023) was a philosopher. Born in Brno to Jewish parents, he emigrated with his family first to Switzerland and later to Venezuela. From 1946 to 1949 he studied classical philology at Stanford University, followed by philosophy in Freiburg. He received his doctorate in 1956 for a study of Aristotle’s metaphysical concepts and completed his habilitation in Tübingen in 1966 with research on the concept of truth in Husserl and Heidegger. From 1966 to 1975 he was a professor at Heidelberg University, then worked at the Max Planck Institute in Starnberg and taught at the Free University of Berlin from 1980 to 1992. He became an honorary professor at the University of Tübingen in 1999 and received an honorary doctorate from the Autonomous University of Madrid in 2005.
