Birgit Hein (1942–2023) was a German filmmaker, film scholar, performance artist, and university lecturer. From 1966 onward, she created structural films, performances, and documentary film essays. Through her films and film-theoretical publications, she played a major role in shaping German underground and experimental cinema.
