Susan Sontag

Susan Sontag (1933–2004) was an American writer, cultural critic, and film and theatre director. She gained international recognition especially for her essays, including *Against Interpretation*, *On Photography*, and *Illness as Metaphor*. Her final novel, *In America*, received the National Book Award in 2000. Sontag also received the Jerusalem Prize and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 2003.
