Ulrich Kunzmann (1943–2023) studied Romance languages and literature from 1961 to 1966 and received his doctorate in 1971 with a dissertation on Guatemalan writer and Nobel laureate Miguel Ángel Asturias. After working for around twenty years as a dramaturge for radio and theater productions from the Romance-language world, he became a full-time literary translator in 1991. From 1969 onward, he translated works from French, Spanish, and Portuguese into German, producing more than 70 translations. Latin American literature was a particular focus; authors he translated included Asturias, Alejo Carpentier, Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Pablo Neruda. He also made a major contribution to the first complete German edition of Blaise Pascal’s works.
