Martin Mosebach, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1951, initially trained as a lawyer before turning to writing. He has written novels, short stories, poetry, opera librettos and essays on art, literature, travel, and religious, historical and political subjects. His notable works include the novels *Westend* (1992), *Das Beben* (2005), *Mogador* (2016) and *Die 21* (2018), as well as the essay collection *The Heresy of Formlessness*. Mosebach has received numerous awards, including the Kleist Prize and the Georg Büchner Prize. He is a member of several German academies, including the Academy for Language and Literature and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.
