Thornton Wilder was born on April 17, 1897, in Madison, Wisconsin. His father was a newspaper publisher who served as consul general in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Wilder received numerous awards for his extensive literary work, including three Pulitzer Prizes and the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1957. He died on December 7, 1975, in Hamden, Connecticut.
