Patrick Roth, born in 1953 in Freiburg im Breisgau, began his artistic career in the United States as a director and screenwriter. Alongside film journalism, he wrote and directed radio plays and stage works. His prose debut, »Riverside«, appeared in 1991, and during the 1990s he increasingly turned to prose fiction. His major works include the Christus Trilogy, »Meine Reise zu Chaplin«, »Die Nacht der Zeitlosen«, »Starlite Terrace«, »Die amerikanische Fahrt«, and the novel »Sunrise« (2012), which was nominated for the German Book Prize. Roth received, among others, the Rauris Literature Prize, the Foundation Bible and Culture Prize, the Hugo Ball Prize, and the Literature Prize of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. He also held poetry lectureships at the universities of Frankfurt, Heidelberg, and Hildesheim.
