Thomas Flierl, born in 1957, studied philosophy and aesthetics at Humboldt University of Berlin, where he received his doctorate in 1985. From 1998 to 2000, he served as district councillor for urban development in Berlin-Mitte, and from 2002 to 2006 as Berlin’s Senator for Culture and Science. Flierl also worked as an architectural historian and publicist.
