Susanna Clarke was born in Nottingham in 1959. She studied philosophy, politics and economics at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, and subsequently worked in publishing. She later taught English in Turin and Bilbao. While working as an editor, she wrote her debut novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, published in 2004. The novel received, among other honors, the Hugo Gernsback Award, the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and the World Fantasy Award. Her second novel, Piranesi, was published in 2020.
