Robert Crumb, born in 1943 in Philadelphia, is an American cartoonist and author. He began drawing comics as a teenager and published a fanzine with his brother. After periods in Cleveland and New York, where he contributed to The East Village Other, he moved to San Francisco in 1967. There, together with Don Donahue, he launched the underground comic series Zap Comix. Crumb became known for the character Fritz the Cat and for his work in magazines including Arcade, Raw, and Weirdo, which he edited for several years. He also designed the cover of Janis Joplin’s album Cheap Thrills. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1999, he received a lifetime achievement award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival.
