Ralf von den Hoff

Ralf von den Hoff (born 1963) is a German classical archaeologist and professor of classical archaeology at the University of Freiburg. From 2012 onward, he served as spokesperson for the university’s Collaborative Research Centre 948; in 2018–19, he was a fellow at the Morphomata Kolleg at the University of Cologne. His research has focused on ruler representation, Greek sculpture, ancient portraits, images of heroes, iconology, and the visual culture of the Greek and Roman worlds. His publications include Philosophers’ Portraits of the Early and High Hellenistic Period (1994), Divus Augustus: The First Roman Emperor and His World (2014, with Wilfried Stroh and Martin Zimmermann), and Imitatio heroica: Heldenangleichung im Bildnis (2015, co-editor).
