Born in 1954, Peter Utz studied German and history in Bern and Munich. In 1987, he became Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Lausanne. His research focuses include the Goethe era, the turn of the twentieth century, literary feuilletons, twentieth-century Swiss authors, and literary translation. He has published extensively on Robert Walser and was a Fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2004–05.
