Paul Schirnhofer was born in Vienna in 1960. He initially studied law and history at the University of Vienna before turning to photography as a self-taught photographer. From 1982 to 1986, he worked as a staff photographer for the magazine Wiener and subsequently for Tempo. From 1991 onward, he worked as a freelance photographer, focusing on portraits and reportage and publishing regularly in magazines. His subjects have included Jane Fonda, Marcel Reich-Ranicki, Helmut Schmidt, Otto Waalkes, Angela Merkel, Nick Cave, Karl Lagerfeld, and Mikhail Gorbachev. Beginning in the 1990s, he also regularly photographed Roland Kaiser on tour.
