His professional work included the US “Star Wars” missile-defense program and research into artificial intelligence. He achieved international recognition with his fantasy trilogy The Broken Empire. His novels have received several nominations and awards, including the David Gemmell Award for Best Fantasy Novel; he was also nominated multiple times for the Goodreads Choice Award.
