Maria Lazar

Maria Lazar (1895–1948) was an Austrian writer, translator and journalist. She came from a Jewish upper-middle-class family in Vienna and attended the Eugenia Schwarzwald girls’ school. In Schwarzwald’s salon, Lazar was portrayed by Oskar Kokoschka in 1916. From the early 1920s onward, she worked as a translator and wrote for Austrian, Scandinavian and Swiss newspapers. From 1930, she also published under the pseudonym Esther Grenen. After emigrating from Austria in 1933, she lived first in exile in Denmark and, from 1939, in Sweden. Lazar died in 1948 after a prolonged illness.
