Johannes Hahn studied philosophy and subsequently worked in industry for many years, most recently as CEO of Novomatic AG. In 2003, he became a city councillor in Vienna, and in 2007 he was appointed Federal Minister for Science and Research. From February 2010 to October 2014, he served as European Commissioner for Regional Policy; he subsequently held responsibility for European Neighbourhood Policy and enlargement negotiations.
