Ilya Kaminsky was born in Odessa, Ukraine, in 1977 and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1993. The Ukrainian-American poet, translator, editor, and essayist published, among other works, the poetry collections “Dancing in Odessa” and “Deaf Republic.” His work has been translated into numerous languages. His honors include the Whiting Award, the Metcalf Award, the Levinson Prize, the Pushcart Prize, and Lannan and Guggenheim fellowships. Alongside his literary work, Kaminsky worked as an attorney for San Francisco Legal Aid and the National Immigration Law Center and served as a special advocate for orphaned children in Southern California.
