Horace Walpole (1717–1797) was a British writer, politician, artist and patron of the arts. He served as a member of Parliament and was the son of the two-time British prime minister Robert Walpole. He is known as a founder of the Gothic novel. At his estate, Strawberry Hill near London, which he remodelled in the style of a Gothic castle, he established England’s first private printing press.
