Hauke Brunkhorst, born in 1945, studied German literature, philosophy, education and sociology in Kiel, Freiburg and Frankfurt. He earned his doctorate in 1978 and later completed postdoctoral qualifications in education and sociology at the University of Frankfurt. From 1985 to 1997, he held professorships and visiting professorships in Vienna, Frankfurt, Duisburg and at Freie Universität Berlin. In 1997, he became a professor of sociology in Flensburg. His fields of research include social and legal philosophy, social theory, and the evolution of law and constitutions. He has also published extensively on Jürgen Habermas and his philosophical thought.
