Karl Marx (1818–1883) was a German philosopher, economist, social theorist, and political journalist. After studying law and philosophy, he received his doctorate in 1841 and worked, among other positions, as an editor of the Rheinische Zeitung. Together with Friedrich Engels, he wrote The Communist Manifesto in 1848. His major work, Capital: Critique of Political Economy, was published in 1867. Marx was active in the international workers’ movement and became one of the leading theorists of socialism and communism. His writings had a lasting influence on political movements and the social sciences.
