Hans-Walter Schmuhl (born 1957 in Oberhausen, Germany) is a German historian. He studied history, German studies and Latin in Bochum and Bielefeld. In 1986 he received his doctorate for a study of racial hygiene, National Socialism and Nazi “euthanasia”; in 1995 he completed his habilitation with a study of civic elites and municipal self-government. In 2005 he was appointed außerplanmäßiger Professor of modern history at Bielefeld University. He also served as deputy head of the Institute for the History of Diaconia and Social History at the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal/Bethel. His publications address, among other subjects, the history of National Socialism, medical and scientific history, the history of diaconia, and urban history and urbanization.
