Gustave Doré (1832–1883) was a French draughtsman, painter, illustrator, watercolourist, caricaturist and sculptor. He became particularly known for his illustrations of major works of world literature. Among his best-known work are the illustrations for Dante’s Divine Comedy (1861), Cervantes’ Don Quixote (1863) and La Fontaine’s Fables (1866), as well as for the Bible. He also illustrated other classics and works by contemporary authors.
