Franz Neumann

Franz Neumann (1900–1954) was a German jurist and political scientist. After studying economics and law, he received his doctorate in Frankfurt am Main in 1923 and worked as an assistant to Hugo Sinzheimer and as a lecturer at the Academy of Labour. From 1928 to 1933, he was a trade-union lawyer in Berlin. After fleeing to England in 1933, he studied at the London School of Economics and earned a doctorate under Harold Laski in 1936. He then worked at the Institute of Social Research in New York, where he wrote his best-known work, “Behemoth.” From 1947, Neumann taught at Columbia University. He died in a car accident in 1954.
