Cicero, actually Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BCE), was a Roman lawyer, orator, politician, philosopher, and poet. Born in the provinces, he rose to prominence in Rome through his rhetorical talent and was elected consul. He received the honorary title “pater patriae” (“father of the fatherland”) for his speeches against Catiline. His major works include the “Philippics,” “De re publica” (“On the Republic”), and “De officiis” (“On Duties”).
