Charles Bukowski (1920–1994) was an American writer and poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, on August 16, 1920, and emigrated to the United States with his parents as a young child. Before establishing himself as an author, he worked various jobs, including as a gas station attendant, slaughterhouse and dock worker, and postal employee. He wrote poetry, short stories, and novels, publishing more than 40 volumes of prose and poetry. Bukowski died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994.
