Bukowski at its best. Anyone who says Bukowski can only write disgusting texts about beer shits and sexual intercourse with cheap whores has either never fully engaged with the man and his work or has been blind to the emotional depth of his being. In the poetry collection 'Love is a Dog from Hell', created between 1974 and 1977, his words impress with a honesty that is even foreign to the Beat Generation, and with hidden profundity that makes it hard to switch from one poem to another without getting lost in thoughts and during this time, one might easily fall victim to brief indulgences that prompt self-reflection, as I experienced more than once. Of course, a classic Bukowski piece wouldn't be complete without the aforementioned characteristics, which are also richly represented in this collection. However, this should not deter any reader who may not appreciate his style. For within the lines, amid the excrement, vomit, and liters of alcohol, lies a magic that can resonate with all sorts of people in their own personal way.
