Buchi Emecheta (1944–2017) was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and was a writer and sociologist. After leaving school at an early age and marrying, she accompanied her husband to London. At the age of 22, she separated from him and completed a degree in sociology with distinction. While caring for her five children, she wrote in the early hours of the morning. Her second novel, *Second-Class Citizen*, is based on her life. Emecheta’s extensive body of work received several awards.
