Boris Pasternak (1890–1960) was a Russian writer, poet, and translator. He published his first volume of poetry in 1914, followed by further poetry collections and works of prose. He became internationally known above all for his novel *Doctor Zhivago*, completed in 1955. He also translated works by Shakespeare and Goethe, among others. In 1958, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his poetry and prose, but declined it under political pressure.
