Born in 1955, Bernhard Zimmermann studied Classical Philology and Ancient History in Konstanz and London. He received his doctorate in 1983 and his habilitation in Classical Philology in 1988. He taught as a professor of Classical Philology at the universities of Zurich (1990–1992), Düsseldorf (1992–1997), and Freiburg im Breisgau (from 1997). Zimmermann has published extensively on ancient drama and the ancient novel, Greek metrics, and the reception of classical literature in modern times. For the Kröner publishing house, he edited the complete works of the three major Greek tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides.
