Barbara Conrad, born in Heidelberg in 1937, first trained as a librarian before studying Slavic studies, English and German literature. She received her doctorate in 1971. She subsequently worked as a research associate and assistant at the University of Heidelberg’s Institute of Slavic Studies and taught in Kassel. She later worked as a freelance translator and editor. Her translations include works by Anton Chekhov, Boris Pasternak, Boris Pilnyak and Leo Tolstoy. In 2011, she received the Leipzig Book Fair Prize for her new translation of Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.”
