Art Spiegelman, born in Stockholm in 1948, is an American comics author and illustrator. He emigrated to the United States in early childhood with his parents, both survivors of the Shoah. His acclaimed graphic novel “Maus,” based on his father’s memories of the Holocaust, won the Pulitzer Prize. In “In the Shadow of No Towers,” Spiegelman addressed the trauma of the September 11, 2001 attacks. From 1980 to 1991, he co-edited the avant-garde comics magazine “Raw” with Françoise Mouly. He also taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York and worked as an illustrator for various magazines. In 2022, he received the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters for his lifetime achievement.
