Anthony Burgess (1917–1993) was an English writer, composer and author of librettos, essays, screenplays, nonfiction and translations. He studied English literature and phonetics in Manchester, worked as a lecturer at the University of Birmingham after the Second World War, and later served in the British Ministry of Education. Burgess wrote around thirty novels, including *A Clockwork Orange*, the *Enderby* books and *Der Fürst der Phantome*. *A Clockwork Orange* is among his best-known works and is regarded as a modern classic.
