Andreas Maercker (Prof. Dr. phil., Dr. med.) studied medicine and psychology in Halle/Saale and Berlin. In 1994, he completed a one-year research stay at the University of California, San Francisco. He habilitated at Dresden University of Technology in 1998 with a thesis on post-traumatic stress disorders and the consequences of extreme stress among victims of political violence. He was a professor at the Psychological Institute of the University of Zurich, where he headed the department of psychopathology and clinical intervention. His research has focused on trauma-related disorders and psychotherapy, as well as psychotherapy for older adults, including depression, complicated grief, and early-stage dementia.
