Yvon Chouinard came to California as a child with his French-Canadian immigrant family, where he developed a passion for climbing. In the 1950s, he sold climbing pitons from the trunk of his car. In 1964, he published his first one-page mail-order catalog; these modest beginnings grew into the company Patagonia. Chouinard was also a co-founder of the “1% for the Planet” initiative, which is dedicated to environmental protection.
