William Wordsworth (1770–?) was an English poet and a leading figure of English Romanticism. Born in Cockermouth, he grew up in England’s northern Lake District. After studying in Cambridge and London, he spent time in France, where he witnessed the Reign of Terror. The French Revolution and the conflict between his republican convictions and the violence he observed shaped his thought and poetry. In 1798, he and Samuel Taylor Coleridge helped initiate English Romanticism.
