Werner Klemke

Werner Klemke (1917–1994) was a German graphic artist, book designer, and illustrator. Born and deceased in Berlin, he taught at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art from 1951 and became a professor of book graphics and typography in 1956. Klemke illustrated classics of world literature as well as numerous children’s books, helping shape book art in East Germany. His work received several awards, including the National Prize of the GDR.
