Werner Bergengruen (1892–1964) was a writer and journalist. Born in Riga, he studied in Marburg, Munich, and Berlin and served as a soldier in the First World War. In 1936, he converted to Catholicism. During the National Socialist era, he was regarded as one of the representatives of the so-called inner emigration.
